William Orbit

William Mark Wainwright (born 15 December 1956), known professionally as William Orbit, is an English musician and record producer who has sold 200 million recordings worldwide of his own work, his production and song-writing work. He is a recipient of multiple Grammy Awards, Ivor Novello Awards and other music industry awards. Orbit (Wainwright) was raised in Palmers Green, a suburb of London. His parents were both schoolteachers; he was the elder of two sons. He left school at the age of 16, and subsisted for a number of years in various low-paying jobs, while seeking an outlet for his creativity. Around this time, while rooming with a friend who was trying to start a recording studio, Orbit found his musical calling.

In the 80s, Orbit had been in the synth-pop band Torch Song and started Guerilla Studios, working with some of the edgiest acts of the decade – Gary Numan, Cabaret Voltaire and Laibach among them. The following decade, he made house music as Bassomatic. But by 2000, as chillout boomed in popularity, you couldn’t move for Orbit’s ambient-pop twinkliness. Indulging his other great love, orchestral music, Orbit’s classical-electronic fusion album Pieces in a Modern Style went to No 2 in 2000, off the back of a successful remix of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings by the Dutch trance DJ Ferry Corsten.

Madonna-William-Orbit-Outtakes (1).webp

Several years ago Orbit moved back to England from Los Angeles and got in with a party crowd. He took up painting, but mainly cocaine. “Instead of worrying about my career, I could just be a hedonist,” he says. “I’d never done coke before and in a short space of time I’d be the guy that could do the most. And then I went to some festivals and I did LSD, mushrooms, MDMA, coke, some hormones that everybody was experimenting with. Codeine. I wasn’t aware of what I was doing and I ended up having a psychotic episode.” Orbit speaks highly of Madonna with whom he has made three albums..

The first time they worked together, on Ray of Light, “killed me”, says Orbit. “I was in a crisis with my family, which I put on hold. I remember getting very ill that winter; at the age of 43, I was done in physically.” It took months to complete. Madonna, who was a new mum at the time, cracked the whip. As hard as it was, it was an atmosphere in which he thrived. “I flourish under that,” he says. “She’s a fabulous producer. When it says ‘produced by Madonna and William Orbit’, people don’t always give her the credit for that. But she’s as responsible as me.”

3V2A1684-1024x683.jpg

After his initial string of successes, however, Orbit became a chart-pop shill for Ricky Martin, Mel C and Chris Brown (and those are just the songs that were released). “I got into this songwriting scene in America and I thought: ‘I’m not suited to this,’” he says. “The inner voice was saying: ‘You did Ray of Light, why are you doing remixes now? You should be the don.’ I didn’t listen. My inner voice got suffocated by my own misguidedness and I felt increasingly impotent to do anything about it.” Orbit worked on Britney Spears 2013 album Britney Jean, its opening track, Alien, in which she compares herself to a lonely extraterrestrial. It’s great being 65 – it’s easier than being 40, because you’re an old dude and you don’t have an agenda any more. It’s a young game, the pop music game. But I think there’s room for one Bill Nighy. It’s not like it’s a crowded field.”

Ferry Corsten born 4 December 1973) is a Dutch DJ, record producer and remixer. He is well known for producing many pioneering trance tracks during the 1990s–2000s under his numerous aliases, including System F, Moonman, Pulp Victim and Gouryella. In recent years, he has shifted to a broader electronic music style, playing everything from progressive house to uplifting trance; and hosts his own weekly radio show, Resonation Radio.

Ferry Corsten was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. As a child, he would listen to a Dutch radio show called "The Soulshow", which played different selections of electronic music including disco and soul music. Whenever he heard a track that he liked, he would go to the record store and purchase it. His first experience in DJing was when he was 15 years old at that time when he was playing at his school parties. As a teenager he saved money to buy his first keyboard by washing cars, and selling mix tapes to kids in his neighborhood. He was inspired by Ferry Maat and Ben Liebrand for his mixes. He eventually released a record with a couple of friends when he was just sixteen years old and later began releasing self-made productions while he grew up in Rotterdam in the 1990s, producing underground hardcore gabber tracks, later expanding into club-house and trance music. During these years, Corsten also studied to become an electrical engineer. In 1995, under the name Hole In One and aged just 21 years old, he won the prestigious De Grote Prijs van Nederland award, which recognized his contribution to The Netherlands' electronic dance music scene.

Vaughan Mason & Crew was an American funk and post-disco based group led by Vaughan Mason (October 24, 1950 – April 2, 2020). They are best known for their single "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll", which reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles and number 38 on the Disco Top 100 charts in 1980, riding the crest of the roller disco wave that was popular at the time. In 1981, Vaughan Mason released the single "Jammin' Big Guitar", which charted at number 65. "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" has since been used in various samples by De La Soul, Mr. Magic, Jimmy Spicer, and Daft Punk. Mason later recorded with Butch Dayo and Raze. Mason died of natural causes in 2020, at the age of 69. "Break 4 Love" is a song written, produced and recorded by Vaughan Mason, the principal member of American house music group Raze, the song's original credited performer. The song, the group's only significant US hit, featured vocals by Keith Thompson and Vaughan Mason, as well as sexual sound samples by Erique Dial. The single peaked at number 28 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1988. It is still considered a classic of the early house music genre. The song interpolates "Today, Tomorrow and Forever" (1987) by The Castle Beat.

Mishra became straight edge at the age of sixteen and is a radical Marxist; he has been outspoken about his beliefs. Mishra has said, "I'm a mediocre singer, I'm a terrible guitarist, I'm a pretty good keyboardist, I'm a good producer, not amazing, but good." Noting his status as a one-hit wonder, he said it is "better than a no-hit wonder" and elaborated, "To be a professional musician and to be entertaining people twenty years after my biggest hit, I feel like I'm the luckiest person alive. “José Sebastião da Rosa, known as Juca Rosa, was one of the most important and notable black religious leaders that Rio de Janeiro ever had. Born in 1833, son of an African mother, he worked as a tailor and coachman before becoming the great Pai Quibombo, as he was also called.

In the 1860s, living in the center of the Court, on Senhor dos Passos street, almost on the corner of Núncio street, Rosa led a mysterious sect, which brought together many followers. Besides blacks, slave workers, free & freed, and the capoeiras, there were also, among his followers, politicians, rich merchants, members of the white economic and intellectual elite. Thanks to the prestige he acquired, Rosa established relations with important people in society and his ceremonies brought together members of the most varied social origins, who went to his home in search of his precious – and expensive – advice and vast cures.

In distinct ways, Juca Rosa became a notorious figure in Carioca society at the time. It wasn’t about a mere sorcerer or supplicant, just another among so many other practicioners of different religions and curative arts that inhabited the Court, competing with scientific doctors in a contest for patients. After all, in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century, the whole country was like this, where the most diverse curative arts existed side by side with the official medicine of the Empire.

Although against the law and arduously combatted by groups of medics and by sectors of the press, the illegal practice of medicine was strongly present in the daily life of all sorts of social sectors. But Juca Rosa, who concentrated the activities of a religious leader and healer, was a special case: his name became synonymous with black religious leader, or “black sorcerer”, as the publications of the era would write, and he was associated with the superstitious practices of ignorant people.

Santa Maria Island, Azores, is the closest island to São Miguel Island, which is the Portuguese archipelago’s largest and most populated island. You can get from one island to another via a short 20-minute flight. That’s excellent news for those especially hoping to come from Boston to Santa Maria Azores, Toronto to Santa Maria Azores, and even Lisbon to Santa Maria Azores, as there are direct flights to São Miguel, Azores available from each of these locales! So, once you enjoy your direct flight to São Miguel and you’re done visiting this magnificent main Azores Island, you can island-hop right over to Santa Maria, the sunny island of the archipelago! Yes, Santa Maria in the Azores is the oldest of the archipelago’s nine islands, and being a “big sister” island comes with its advantages  - the climate is hotter, drier, and much less humid - and Santa Maria Island is home to the only white sand beaches in all of the Azores!

La Santa María, originally La Gallega, was the largest of the three small ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, with the backing of the Spanish monarchs. Her master and owner was Juan de la Cosa. Santa María was built in Pontevedra, Galicia. Santa María was a medium-sized commercial nau or carrack, about 62 ft (18.9 m) long on deck, and according to Juan Escalante de Mendoza in 1575, Santa Maria was "very little larger than 100 toneladas" (about 100 tons, or tuns) burthen, or burden, and was used as the flagship for the expedition. Santa María had a single deck and three small masts.

With three masts, Santa María was the slowest of Columbus' vessels but performed well in the Atlantic Ocean crossing. Then on the return trip, on 24 December (1492), not having slept for two days, Columbus decided at 11:00 p.m. to lie down to sleep. The night being calm, the steersman also decided to sleep, leaving only a cabin boy to steer the ship, a practice which the admiral had always strictly forbidden. With the boy at the helm, the currents carried the ship onto a sandbank, running her aground off the present-day site of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. It sank the next day. Realizing that the ship was beyond repair, Columbus ordered his men to strip the timbers from the ship. The timbers were later used to build a fort which Columbus called La Navidad (Christmas) because the wreck occurred on Christmas Day, north from the modern town of Limonade.

Manau - La tribu de Dana (Clip Officiel remasterisé)

[Verse 1]
The wind blows on the plains of Armorican Brittany
I take a last look at my wife, my son and my estate
Akim, the blacksmith's son, came to get me;
The druids decided to take the fight to the valley
Where all our ancestors, giant Celtic warriors
After great battles imposed themselves as masters
Now is the time to defend our land
Against an army of Cimmerians ready to cross swords
The whole tribe gathered around the large menhirs
To invoke the gods so that they can bless us
After this prayer with my brothers, without showing any zeal,
the leaders gave us all sips of mead.
For courage, so that there is no weakness
To remain tall and proud when we are in battle
For this is the first time for me that I go into battle
And I hope to be worthy of the tribe of Dana

[Chorus]
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, lalilala
In the valley, oh oh, I could hear the echoes
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, lalilala
In the valley, oh oh, of war songs near the tombs

[Verse 2]
After some druid incantations and magic
The whole tribe, sword in hand, ran towards the enemy.
The fight was terrible and I saw only shadows
Cutting through the enemy who always returned in greater numbers.
My brothers fell one after the other before my eyes.
Under the weight of the weapons that all these barbarians possessed
Spears, axes and swords in the Garden of Eden
Who flowed blood on the green grass of the plain
Like those days of pain, when man drags himself
To the limit of the reign of evil and hatred
Was it necessary to continue this fight that had already been lost?
But such was the pride of the entire tribe
The fight continued like this until sunset.
Of extreme ferocity and more relentlessness;
Had to defend the land of our ancestors buried there
And for all the laws of the tribe of Dana

[Chorus]
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, lalilala
In the valley, oh oh, I could hear the echoes
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, lalilala
In the valley, oh oh, of war songs near the tombs

[Verse 3]
At the end of the valley we could hear the sound of a horn
Of an enemy leader who was calling back his whole horde
Did he understand that we would fight even in hell
And that to the tribe of Dana belonged these lands?
The warriors were leaving, I didn't understand
How far they had come to get there
When my gaze fell all around me
I was the only one standing of the tribe; that's why
My fingers spread apart as I let go of my weapons
And tears began to flow down my cheeks
I never understood why the gods spared me
From that dark day in our history that I told
The wind still blows over Armorican Brittany
And I joined my wife, my son and my domain
I rebuilt everything with my own hands to get to this point
I became king of the tribe of Dana

[Chorus]
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, lalilala
In the valley, oh oh, I could hear the echoes
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, lalilala
In the valley, oh oh, of the war songs near the tombs

[Outro]
From the tribe of Dana
I became king
From the tribe of Dana
I became king
From the tribe of Dana

Manau (French pronunciation: [mano]) is a Breton hip hop band formed in 1998, known for their fusing of traditional Celtic melodies with modern hip hop beats. It was initially composed of Martial Tricoche [fr], Cédric Soubiron, and Hervé "R.V." Lardic [fr] until Lardic's departure and replacement by Gregor Gandon. Although the band is currently based in Paris, all of the members can trace their roots back to Brittany. The group's name comes from the old Gaelic name for the Isle of Man. The band set to work on their new single, "La Tribu de Dana" and it was released in May 1998. The song rocketed to the top of the charts, selling a huge 1.7 million copies to date, 1.5 million of them in the first few months after its release. "La tribu de Dana" means "the tribe of Dana," and is the name of a group of figures in Irish mythology, also described in L'épopée Celte.

Proudly original and ever-defiant Gala has always been the kind of woman to forge her own path. An outsider from the get-go, Gala left Italy as a teenager and landed in Manhattan. While studying at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Gala wandered the NYC underground photographing artists and eccentric club-goers. Ultimately, her camera was the key to her success. In exchange for a photograph of a European DJ she recorded her first demo. In no time, with no formal training, no industry connections, but huge amounts of attitude and determination, Gala became a dance floor icon. “Freed from Desire” became an international pop classic. Referred to as a “cult artist” for her minimalist look and haunting voice, Gala suddenly disappeared at the top of her success leaving behind an air of mystery. After her manager Steve Fargnoli’s (Prince’s former manager) unexpected death, Gala ended up locked into a poor deal with a record company that gave her no artistic control. Longing to break free from her constraints and to return to the freedom that had fueled her initial rocket to success, Gala left her European record company and moved back to NYC, this time settling in Brooklyn. She immediately formed her own label, Matriarchy Records, and set out to redefine her sound, her life and her career.

Intermission is a German Eurodance project, which was successful in Europe from 1993 to 1996. The biggest hit "Piece of My Heart" was released in late 1993. Behind Intermission was the Dance Music Production (DMP), a German producer team from Frankfurt am Main which compromised Michael Eisele aka Attack II, Thorsten Adler, aka Tom Tom wedge Jacques G. Coin and Jürgen Katzmann. For the first single "Honesty" the team released in 1993, the singer was Nina, who had already vocalized on several hits by Captain Hollywood. The second single "Piece of My Heart", which was sung by Valerie Scott, reached the top ten in Germany and Austria. "Six Days" and "Give Peace a Chance" were hits in 1994. The vocals were performed by Lori Glori, whose voice also coined the hits of Centory and Loft. In the same year the album Piece of My Heart was released. It contained all the previous Intermission songs in their original single versions. Because it was released under the name "Intermission feat. Lori Glori", the original voices remain uncredited. In 1995 Intermission made the hit "All Together Now". It was only successful in Germany. A few months later, the production team put by the single "Planet Love". Complemented with vocals by Raquel Gomez, "Planet Love" became a hit in Germany where it peaked at #24. "Miracle of Love", released in 1996, was a small hit in Germany. The last Intermission publication, "Blow Your Mind", was a collaboration with DJ MARSS and Lori Glori returned to sing for the project in 1997. It hit the shelves, but missed a chart position.

Produced by Marc Pomeroy with the help of a well known disco loop, the original mix was soon transformed into a full vocal version and the result was one of the biggest vocal house records that 1998 could offer '" and it still rocks dancefloors today.

Kim Sanders (born October 24th, 1968, in East Chicago, Indiana) is an American singer and songwriter based in Germany. Sanders began to release singles as a solo artist in 1994 and wrote songs for other musicians. She also provided vocals for a number of Captain Hollywood Project's songs, including the 1993 singles All I Want and Impossible. In 1993 and 1994, she released three of her singles, "Show Me", "Tell Me That You Want Me" and "Ride". In 1998, Sanders became the front-woman of the German dance project Culture Beat, on the album Metamorphosis. In 2003, she released her debut album Pretty on Edge, which failed to enter the charts due to the record company placing the incorrect bar code on the album. Although this was a huge setback for Sanders' solo career, she has since collaborated with artists such as Schiller, Aural Float, Stefanie Heinzmann, Till Brönner, Nicola Conte and Wolfgang Haffner. Her solo album A Closer Look was released in 2009 with C.A.R.E. Music Group and won the Preis Der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik (German Recording Critics Prize) in the category of Black Music, in February 2010.

In December 2011, Sanders became one of the contestants on German reality talent show The Voice of Germany. In the first season of the show, Sanders performed her cover versions of "All That She Wants", "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down". She ultimately became one of the four finalists in the first season of the show but she and the other two contestants lost to Ivy Quainoo, with Sanders coming in second.

Sabrina Salerno, the Italian singer, songwriter and model, hasn't slowed down since she sold 20 million records worldwide and her 1987 single "Boys (Summertime Love)" topped European charts. On the contrary, Salerno — who is sometimes known simply as "Sabrina" — is out and about and looking amazing at 56.. After winning a beauty contest in her native region, Liguria, Sabrina started modelling, and in 1984 she made her television debut on the Italian prime time show Premiatissima on Canale 5. In 1986, her debut single "Sexy Girl", sung in English, was released. Produced by Claudio Cecchetto, it became a Top 20 hit in her native Italy and was a modest international success. In late 1987, she released her first studio album, Sabrina, which was entirely sung in English. In addition to "Sexy Girl", the album included her international breakthrough hit "Boys (Summertime Love)" (Number 1 in both in France and Switzerland, and Top 5 in more than ten other countries;) and "Hot Girl", a Top 20 hit in some European countries. "Boys" gained popularity for its famous video, which included suggestive scenes of Sabrina dancing in a bikini that occasionally slipped down to reveal part of her nipples. The song has sold more than 1.5 million copies to date worldwide and remains Sabrina's trademark hit.

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" is a song by the English rock band Procol Harum that was issued as their debut record on 12 May 1967. The single reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart on 8 June and stayed there for six weeks. Without much promotion, it reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[10] One of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love, it is one of the most commercially successful singles in history, having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. In the years since, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" has become an enduring classic, with more than 1,000 known cover versions by other artists. With its Bach-derived instrumental melody, soulful vocals, melancholic tone, and unusual lyrics, the music of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was composed by Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher, while the lyrics were written by Keith Reid. Originally, the writing credits only listed Brooker and Reid. In 2009, Fisher won co-writing credit for the music in a unanimous ruling from the Law Lords.

In 1977, the song was named joint winner (along with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody") of "The Best British Pop Single 1952–1977" at the Brit Awards. In 1998, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004, the performing rights group Phonographic Performance Limited recognised it as the most-played record by British broadcasting of the past 70 years and Rolling Stone placed it 57th on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". In 2009, it was reported as the most played song in the last 75 years in public places in the UK.
