Millions of stray dogs in Turkey are being rounded up and killed after the country passed a new law calling for them to be put down. While it is aimed at removing the dogs off the streets and putting them into shelters, the law does state that any dogs showing aggressive behaviour or those with untreatable diseases will be put down. The country currently has 322 animal shelters with a capacity for 105,000 dogs, according to the bill, far short of what would be needed to round up the number of strays, which had led many to think large numbers would be put down.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets over the past few weeks to protest against the law, occasionally scuffling with police and carrying banners including slogans such as 'You cannot kill them' and 'Take back the law'.

Residents of Turkish towns and cities often take care of street animals, putting out makeshift shelters, food and water for them.

One survey showed less than 3% of people supported putting them down, while nearly 80% were in favour of dogs being put in shelters.

Social media posts show a man who appears to look like the Eiffel Tower climber being escorted away from the landmark by police in handcuffs. They have also reported that in response to the person filming the man appears to have a British accent. The man - who appears to be British from his accent - can be heard saying "bloody warm innit" as he is led away. Specialist police climbers can be seen in social media posts around the man before he is escorted away.

A video shared to social media shows a man scaling the tower. In the video a man can be heard saying: "There is a dude climbing the Eiffel tower he has just passed the blue ring, I don't think he is wearing a shirt. Er, that's crazy."

The Eiffel Tower was a centrepiece of the opening ceremony, with Celine Dion serenading the city from one of its viewing areas. The Tower is not expected to be part of the closing ceremony, which was set to begin at Stade de France in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis at 9 p.m.

Miracles do happen, A deep sea fisherman from Devon has accidentally caught a Lego shark which was lost at sea off a cargo ship almost thirty years ago. Richard West, a fisherman who lives in Plymouth, discovered the plastic toy on the top of his fishing nets 20 miles south of Penzance in Cornwall on Tuesday 06-08-24. The 35-year-old got in touch with the project Lego Lost at Sea – with the founder Tracey Williams saying the piece is the first ever reported shark from almost 52,000 Lego sharks which vanished off the Tokio Express cargo ship on 13 February 1997. “Sharky trawled up 20 miles south of Penzance on fishing vessel FY848 Defiant,”

Mr West told the scheme in a message sent late on Tuesday night. “I’m so happy about it - it’s way better than any fish I’ve caught all week. Credits to vessel skipper Andrew Shaw, who thinks I am insane for how excited I got about finding it.” A freak wave in a powerful gale swept 62 shipping containers into the sea 20 miles off Land’s End – with one bearing 4,756,940 pieces of Lego. Many of the pieces of lego were sea-themed. “I could tell straight away what it was because I had Lego sharks in the pirate ship set when I was little. I loved them. It’s been 25 years since I’ve seen that face,” he told the media outlet.

Mr West was on the Defiant FY848 – a boat which travels between Plymouth, Brixham and Newlyn, fishing for sole, monkfish and dory when he found the lego shark. In a post about the catch, Lego Lost at Sea said: “Oh my goodness – our very first Lego shark from the Great Lego Spill of 1997 has just been hauled up from the deep! “Caught in a fisherman’s net and somewhat battered and bruised after 27 years at the bottom of the ocean, this Lego shark is one of 51,800 lost overboard from the Tokio Express and the only one we’ve ever seen.” The post explained these lego sharks were included in several Lego sets from 1997, including Deep Sea Bounty, Shark Cage Cove, and Shark Attack.

Millions of pieces of Lego are still washing up on Cornish coastlines - 28 years after first becoming lost at sea. Delia Webb of the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition (CPPC) said: "The World Shipping Council's last report in 2017 said that 1,500 containers fall off ships every year into the sea globally.

"It is a different kind of plastic pollution coming from the shipping industry. In Cornwall we get a lot of container spill items funnelled towards us because of the shape of the county and tides. "The plastic is still washing up undamaged because the plastic is that durable. If it is swallowed by a marine mammal it is dangerous so that shows this is a type of pollution that needs to be addressed as well as littering."
