Geordie Greep - Holy, Holy
Geordie Greep - Holy, Holy
Geordie Wade Greep was born on 20 August 1999 and raised in Walthamstow, London. He has considered his upbringing in the town beneficial, citing its cultural diversity as "brilliant for a young person". He has credited his father with helping him developing a taste for music in his youth, teaching him that "there are good and bad music, and there are no boundaries between genres". His mother worked at a salsa club during his childhood, which resulted in him developing a distaste for the genre; however, upon revisiting salsa music as an adult, he acquired a newfound appreciation for it. He listened to his father's record collection of progressive rock, classical music, and country and was also interested in the "whiz-bang impact" of cartoon scores.
Greep first took interest in the guitar when he was given the video game Guitar Hero for his seventh birthday. He grew fond of the music featured in the game, in particular "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand, and later received an electric guitar for his eighth birthday. Around this time, his father would lend him CDs of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin from his own personal collection, as well as those of progressive rock bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, and King Crimson and jazz musicians such as Miles Davis. His first experiences of playing live music came at around age 11, when he began playing gospel music in churches, despite the fact he did not have a religious upbringing. The performances had a profound effect on his musical development, bringing him experiences of improvising while playing, a practice that he has stated is lacking in the education of secular white musicians.
Greep is an avid fan of boxing, often expressing his admiration for the sport in interviews. He has named Sugar Ray Leonard as his favourite boxer. Boxing has also had an influence on Black Midi's music, serving as the inspiration for the band's song "Sugar/Tzu", with Greep stating: "In boxing, there's the intensity, just nonstop—everything is over the top. That's kind of with our stuff as well. If there is a more emotional song or whatever, it's pushed to the max, it's very brash and almost comedically intense."

In 2018, the Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood asked the Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner to join him for a session to try some ideas. They had first worked together on Greenwood's soundtrack to the 2012 film The Master. A few months later, they asked the Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke to join. Radiohead's drummer, Philip Selway, said it was healthy for the members to explore different projects and "see what these other musical voices can do with your ideas". The Smile's first record was produced by Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's longtime producer. Godrich said the project emerged from Greenwood "writing all these riffs, waiting for something to happen" during the COVID-19 lockdown. He cited the pandemic and the unavailability of the Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien, who was busy with his debut solo album, Earth (2020), as motivating factors. Pitchfork attributed the Smile to Greenwood's frustration with Radiohead's slow working pace and his desire to release records that are "90 percent as good [that] come out twice as often". Greenwood said: "We didn't have much time, but we just wanted to finish some songs together. It's been very stop-start, but it's felt a happy way to make music." The Smile members agreed not to give interviews about the project. They take their name from the title of a poem by Ted Hughes. Yorke said it was "not the smile as in 'ahh', more the smile as in the guy who lies to you every day".

"Bodies Laughing"
Swaying side to side
Jaws are open wide
Hid under my hat
Just to wind you up
Just to piss you off
Floating on their backs
You're falling on your ass
Falling through the glass
Everybody's laughing
Bodies laughing
They snort and then they hoot
They're lapping up the soup
Slipping in the mud
You're falling on your ass
You're falling through the glass
And everybody's laughing
Bodies laughing
'Cause we can't control it
We can't control it, we can't control it anymore
We can't control it, we can't control it
We can't control it anymore
Control it anymore
Dogs a-barking
Cymbals crashing
Tongues a lashing
Slow convulsions
And everybody's laughing
Bodies laughing
'Cause we can't control it, we can't control it
We can't control it anymore
We can't control it, we can't control it
We can't control it anymore
Control it anymore
You're falling on your ass
You're falling through the glass
And everybody's laughing
Bodies laughing
Chain reacting
Happy slapping

Matt Stephenson (also known as DJ Chaotic Ugly) In an interview with Revolver magazine, Stephenson defined Machine Girl as "fucked-up electronic punk" and stated that they did not like the "industrial" tag for being "very goth, and very black and white" considering the project "a lot more colorful". Kerrang! listed them as one of the "bands expanding the definition of hardcore", and described the project as "a particularly punky and ferocious breed of the electronic sub-genre breakcore that could easily pass for hardcore when they rip it live". Pitchfork defined their style as "relentlessly smashing together bits of punk, grindcore, rave, industrial, and more" and "unpredictable and dangerous, full of animalistic rage and uncontrollable energy".

Owens was born on 24 August 1988 in Rhuddlan, Flintshire, on the North Wales coast. Owens recalls writing poetry as a child and that being out in nature (in her mother's fields) gave her the time and the solitude to write. As a teenager, she sang in her school choir and played bass and drums. Owens grew up in a nearby small village where, she describes, "everyone knows everyone else". She began working at 14 as a waitress and spent her teenage years "involved in the 2006/2007 indie scene". At age 19, Owens moved from Wales to Manchester to work at a cancer treatment hospital. While working as an auxiliary nurse, Owens would use her paid leave to help run local indie festivals. It was the patients who would ultimately urge her to pursue her music career.

Her family moved frequently during her high school years because of her father's business and as a result she had a hard time forming close friendships. Having been raised in a music-loving family, her interest in singing comes mostly from her family. At the age of 10, she sang in a high school choir and began writing songs with her brother. She attended Les Cours Sonou University and received a BA degree in international relations and "political science". During her college years, she was often bullied by her classmates because of her age and appearance. To counter the feelings, she experienced from being taunted, Starr turned to music. "I would listen to Nicki Minaj on my way to school and I'd feel like the second Nicki Minaj." Starr's mother was very supportive of her musical ambitions and always encouraged her to pursue a singing career.

Their debut extended play, Metal & Dust, was released in 2013 by Metal & Dust Recordings; their debut album, If You Wait (2013), reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Double Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The band's next two studio albums, Truth Is a Beautiful Thing (2017) and Californian Soil (2021), both reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart.
London Grammar's music has been described as "a blend of ambient, ethereal and classical sounds" with melancholy guitar, soaring vocals, plaintive lyrics, and often displaying trip-hop and dance influences. Hannah Reid's powerful, haunting vocals – prominent on all of London Grammar's tracks released to date – are often compared to those of Judie Tzuke and Florence Welch. The songs are a collaborative effort, as Reid explains: "I write the lyrics and the top lines. But the songs initiate from all three of us. Dot will write a piano part or a music score. Dan will add some guitars." She describes the songs as "emotionally affected" and said that she "writes about people who come in and out of my life."
