KETTAMA - Man With A Second Face

Evan Campbell, aka KETTAMA, is the stuff of Irish legend. A few years ago he was living at his mum’s house in Galway, mixing tunes on a tiny Bluetooth speaker given to him by an ex-girlfriend. Now he’s on the global stage, pumping his distinctive, hard-hitting style of house-adjacent dance into enthralled crowds. With a carefree and genre-bending attitude, he’s an artist pioneering new directions for electronic music.
KETTAMA attributes his rapid ascent to dumb luck. “It only takes one person to play your song”, he says—and in his case, that person was Mall Grab. Now best friends, KETTAMA gave him a USB when he was touring Ireland, hardly expecting a response. But shortly after, Mall Grab started playing one of KETTAMA’s tracks, ‘B O D Y’, during his sets. The internet loved it, and the rest is history.

KETTAMA - Gotta Have It
I look up orchestral samples non-stop. Millions and millions of YouTube videos of 1920s abstract sounds are just sat there in my library. I need to go vinyl digging for some more orchestral stuff soon. Also, if I get a talking vocal, it’s normally from old Irish television. But I’ve only done that 2 or 3 times.
What were you like as a teenager?
KETTAMA: A pisshead. I was shit in school, but I didn’t get into trouble. My principal hated me, but I wasn’t awful. I used to drink a lot on weekends, and listen to music. Not good music, mind (MC Pat Flynn—look him up). Galway had way more clubs when I was younger. When I was 17 I used my brother’s ID to get into the clubs. There were four or five then, and now there’s one and it’s terrible.
You’re an artist who came up entirely through Soundcloud. What’ll be the next big revolution for upcoming artists?
KETTAMA: I think Soundcloud will last for a long time. A lot of people still don’t have it, they just go on Spotify or even YouTube. Soundcloud is where it’s at though. You get more of a fanbase there, and you get instant feedback. I’m going back to it more and more. On Spotify, you just get put on different playlists and people flick through. I’ve never found a new tune on Spotify, ever.

Born and raised in the snowy city of Sapporo, Qrion began making her own sounds in high school as a hobby by using her phone. Taking inspiration from all the environments at her whim, Qrion’s signature sound oozes genuine artistry. She uses the noise of the world around her to create intimate songs anchored by energetic beats and lush synth textures. There’s a reason why she was named on Forbes Japan’s 30 Under 30 list: since the inception of her musical career, Qrion’s name has graced labels such as Anjunadeep, Sasha’s label Last Night On Earth, Mad Decent, and more. Beyond her profund original productions, like her collaborative Sapporo EP with Spencer Brown and her solo debut Sine Wave Party EP via Anjunadeep, Qrion proves her mettle as an excellent remixer, too. She’s lent her future-focused sound to artists such as Alina Baraz, Lane 8, Catching flies, TOKiMONSTA, and more to elevate a variety of songs across the spectrum of today’s hit music.

20-year-old Bognor Regis musician and producer Caitlin Brown, better known as pinkpirate, has crafted an experimental and unique sound whilst disconnected from the influences and pressures that come along being part of a larger music scene. I was around 15 or 16 and I wanted to start sharing my music online, but I didn’t feel like my birth name was particularly suited to the music I was making at the time. I wanted to go for something a bit anonymous, so I chose two words often seen as stereotypically feminine and masculine and put them together to try and keep a bit of mystery, especially as it seemed a bit daunting and embarrassing to be sharing music online in the first place. I started writing music from around the age of 8 onwards because I was getting bored of covering other people’s songs. I really started getting into recording and producing when I was around 14 because we got to use Logic Pro at school, then I would come home and record on my old iPhone through my headphone mic. I think being able to write my own music and lyrics from a young age really helped me learn a lot about myself, even if it was a load of rubbish.

Lyrics
Don't say a word
Feel the ins and outs of a dark-lit world
Alone
Feel the air respond
Hold it in, together down
As we undo
For whatever it's worth,
The mirror shows nothing but mothers pearl,
A love
Edges fade,
Love has gone a darkest shade
This unquiet song replays
To never
Its come for me,
When it's hard enough to see,
Something I want to be,
A whole

Steffi x Virginia - Stab Stealer [DKMNTL108]
Steffi x Virginia - Stab Stealer [DKMNTL108]

Having moved from Berlin to the Portuguese countryside back in 2020, Steffi & Virginia live a life of organic foods, alternative healing and hikes through the wilderness. But their new home is also a creative hub, and as April Clare Welsh learns, it was the euphoria of a rare weekend of debauchery there and on tour that inspired the sparkling house gems of their new album, ‘Patterns Of Vibration’ One of clubland’s most unmistakable and loved duos, Steffi & Virginia present a new album of upfront house music, Patterns of Vibration, on Dekmantel.
Eight gracefully-driven songs stretch out from the hazy fog of the dancefloor to the sun-drenched future decades of house, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage and distinct forward momentum of the two artists.
With their first productions dating back to 2010 the pair continue on a long-lasting journey together as creators and partners. Their debut, Reasons, was quickly followed by the seminal Yours on Ostgut Ton - the blueprint for their trademark sound, embedding gorgeous vocal hooks within luxuriant, weighty club tracks.
In their own words, “a celebration of joyful moments,” Patterns of Vibration was put together over a three month period of intensive work and play. The pair immersed themselves in the daily ritual of putting down ideas at their Candy Mountain studio in the Portuguese countryside. At the same time Steffi’s 50th birthday celebrations fueled their creative fires, reconnecting with old friends and tapping into a deep love for those ecstatic moments of freedom and unity, soundtracked by house music.

In no time a huge folder of ideas amassed and they set about selecting the purest, stand-out signals with the motto, “let the positivity shine through!” It’s been a process that has gifted the two artists with energy and perspective as they continue on their unique path. With the spirit of the fierce night streaming through on every track, this album marks a bright new chapter in the duo’s story - channeling that special potion of emotional vibrations found when music, dance, friends and lovers meet. Thanks to countless hours behind the decks at their Berghain / Panorama Bar residencies and global touring, the album glistens with an ageless urgency and a straight-to-club core. That driving, early morning pulse is mirrored by a deft skill for conjuring arresting electronic hymns; transmitting their passion and collective years together on the road, in clubs, in the studio, and at home. From the moody tribalism of lead single Nightflight, to the chord-led heaven of Stab Stealer, or the tracky 7 In The Morning, Steffi & Virginia’s partnership is alive with the essential throb of a movement that continues to blossom as it enters its 4th decade.Virginia’s jubilant vocal hooks are front and centre on every track, enriched with Steffi’s precision analogue bump. Punchy and direct kick drums carry jacking snares and interwoven synth stabs. Perfectly placed basslines massage the low-end, leaving plenty of space for Virginia’s vivescent vocals.A homogenous sonic code is woven throughout, as Virginia’s voice provides not only the soaring leading lines but also the “ornaments and tentacles” of each track, with percussive details and micro-elements melting into the grooves of every cut.Steffi & Virginia’s house music is the stuff of folklore. Patterns of Vibration weaves a narrative through a record crate full of emotions, a forever-chorus calling out through the night, till the earthy glow of the new dawn.

As a DJ, Damian’s mastery is exceptional. A true storyteller, he often commands those liminal moments of the day — sunrise, sunset, and the hours in between — when only his kind of set will suffice. These are moments that demand a soundtrack capable not just of fitting the mood, but of elevating it, transporting audiences to a deeper, more immersive state. Nuage

Bop
Hailing from Saint-Petersburg in Russia, Bop is a new breed of producer intent on re-writing the rulebook with an intoxicating ice-cold sound; embracing influences from deep house, dub techno and IDM through to minimalist dubstep and ambient drum & bass. Inspired by the likes of Photek and Paradox, he has swiftly carved out a sounds of his own.
Hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, Dimitry Kuzmin aka Nuage is no newcomer to the producing world. Kuzmin began producing under the musical alias of Nuage six years ago with his early releases deeply rooted in drum and bass. His first solo release ‘Missing You’ was included in the Medschool ‘New Blood Compilation’.
His more recent productions have shifted in sound to encompass a wider range of influences and styles, in his own words “to express a broader spectrum of emotions”. Nuage’s first full length release, the incredibly vibrant and deep ‘Music Of Branches’ paid homage to the stylings of Garage, Deep House and 170BPM Eletronica, dropping on Dublin-based Absys Records. With a second LP ‘Print Of You’ released on American Translation Records, Nuage saw further records released on labels such as French imprint Roche Musique, Food Music and Blu Mar Ten.
Nuage continues to create emotionally charged, elevating music, channeling his love of various contrasting genres into his compositions, the end result of which is always a mutiformity of sonic brilliance.
